Homeowners prepare for forecasted single digit temperatures (Jaxon Abele - YourErie.com)

Temperatures are expected to drop to the teens and single digits this week, prompting homeowners to prepare and prevent cold-related damage. Plumbing and heating companies are already experiencing a spike in calls for no heating and frozen pipes.

With the chilling temperatures predicted, Jack Langer from H. Jack Langer Plumbing and Heating reported an early morning influx of service calls Monday, highlighting the urgency for homeowners to take preventive steps. He noted that the significant cold can create havoc for home plumbing and heating systems if not prepared.

Langer opened his warehouse at 3:30 a.m. to find 26 calls waiting, primarily about heating breakdowns and three instances of frozen pipes.

He advised that homeowners should take common-sense precautions to avoid these problems. “If you use a little common sense, make sure your outside hoses are shut off and make sure you have no holes in the wall. All it takes is a half-inch opening for a cold draft to get in and freeze the line,” he added.

Experts agree on several strategies to protect plumbing systems. Keeping cupboards with water pipes open allows warm air circulation and allowing faucets to drip can prevent freezing by maintaining flow.

Langer emphasized the importance of proactive measures, particularly in checking the thermostat batteries of furnaces. He cautioned against waiting until an issue arises. “If your furnace is making a little bit of noise, call right away. Don’t wait until it blasts down. Make sure your filters are changed. It’s all common sense,” he advised.

As temperatures plummet this week, homeowners are urged to act quickly to manage their heating systems. By taking these preventive measures, many cold-related issues can be averted, ensuring homes remain warm and functional throughout the harsh weather.
